Thomas,

What does free have to do with anything. I am not sure you understand 802.11X. It IS the standard for wireless LANs. Deployments in the enterprise are accelerating and home wireless networks are accelerating. In the not to distant future every portable device I own (laptop, PDA, MP3 player) will come 802.11X compatible. There is also considerable movement towards 802.11X becoming the broadband ISP technology in areas where DSL/Cable is not available. Since these early projects are working well and the cost is less than the DSL/Cable infrastructure I think we will see more of these ISP type deployments.

Once the world standardizes on 802.11X for portable devices, there will be service providers who do deals with Starbukcs, B&N, etc that allow customers to access the Internet. The service provider will pay starbucks one way or another for access to their premises and customers.

The evidence is very good that 802.11X will be the standard technology for portable applications. However, 802.11X is not a mobile technology. CDMA is the technology for mobile applications and I think the evidence is very good that CDMA will be the standard for mobile data/voice applications.

What is not clear is how the market will be split between mobile and portable applications. I think to some degree, time to market and application quality and price will be the determing factors. It is very hard to predict right now.

Paul
