Niceguy, Re: "What the heck is Dell going to offer as meaningful competition to Opteron??? Itanic, which is 5 times as expensive and for which one will require significant additional software expense???"

Probably not. I assume they will stick largely with Xeon, which is still deeply rooted with the majority of server market share. Dell isn't interested in low volume architectures like IA-64. They may have a server line or two to keep up with others like Compaq or HP, but the majority of their product lines will be low cost x86 derivatives. Does that mean that they would consider Opteron if it had a cost and performance advantage? I'm sure they will consider it. But then again, AMD has been hounding them to work with a second supplier for years, and Dell has turned them down every time. Even early last year when Athlon was kicking the crap out of the Pentium 4, Dell stuck with Intel, and ended up coming out on top. There are both pros and cons to working with a single supplier - and given Dell's continued gains in PC market share, I would suspect that they have found more pros and fewer cons.
