LSI is an ASIC maker. They are known for a particular ASIC, "system on a chip(SOC)". Their revenue is derived from being the fab for particular SOC applications. LSI has a reputation for being the best (most successful) SOC vendor.

ALTR is a programmable logic device {PLD) maker. While ALTR and LSI are competitors, it is almost literally an apples to oranges competition. I can't say that ALTR is better in its technology than LSI is, but I believe PLDs are a better technology and ALTR is the better investment. ALTR is selling a platform, while LSI is selling particular applications. There are platform aspects to SOCs, but LSI depends on its own fabs to produce particular products, while ALTR is fabless and sells off the shelf platforms. ALTR has used the term "system on a programmable chip" (SOPC), so it has similar IP as LSI which is necessary for a "system". ALTR system elements are programmable.
