niceguy767 - You wrote in all likelihood, will provide a substantial price advantage and a substantial performance advantage over whatever, if anything, INTC will be able to offer as competition, upon the arrival of Opteron...
Upon the arrival of Opteron.....?
Hm......when will it arrive?
When it does arrive, what OS will be available for it - one of the "unmentioned" products at the AMD CC? Or just plain old 32 bit Windows? Since only 32 bit Windows products are currently "announced" for the Opteron (funny, these same OS's and applications run today on Xeons), I guess Opteron will go up against only Xeons.
Now, niceguy767, let's look at a little history. It is now late April,2002, almost 11 months since AMD's "vaunted" 2-way Athlon SMP products were launched.
Eleven months, niceguy767.
What major OEMs are selling Athlon SMP systems ? Answer - NONE - just a few white box guys.
So. history tells us that if the Opteron is launched, say in March of 2003, in February 2004 (11 months after launch), no serious MAJOR OEMs will be selling AMD Opteron-based server systems. And that is almost two years from now.
Guess what Intel's product lineup will look like in two years from now? Monica |
