Athlon - 64 bit future?
Maybe you mean Opteron

Maybe you should listen to AMD's CC or read one of the many sets of notes that are available before trying to correct people.
[AMD] First of all, I wanted to clarify that the first product we will be announcing will be the 8th generation AMD Athlon which will be coming out in Q4 of this year, and then second followed on in the first half of '03 by the AMD Opteron, which is targeted at servers and workstations.

The Opteron name is introduced to allow AMD to differentiate their high-end server/workstation chips. It is reserved for dual processor Clawhammer and multiprocessor Sledgehammer.

Single processor Clawhammer systems will remain Athlons. Perhaps you were thinking of Durons, which are to be retired. AMD does not need Duron when Clawhammer Athlon becomes the budget processor.

AMD's new naming is something Intel should be really wary of. Athlon and P4 have been neck and neck performance-wise for the past year and it looks like Clawhammer will be able to keep the Athlon brand at a similar level of competetiveness.

That leaves AMD with a new brand that performs better than Athlon/P4 and Intel has no equivalent. Could be big bucks for AMD in that new differentiation.
