NDP: Stop selloff of Hydro One customers to Alberta

DRYDEN, ON, April 27 - NDP Leader Howard Hampton called on Premier Eves today to halt Hydro One's sale of 200,000 fixed-price customers to an Alberta company.
"These consumers chose to stay with a trusted power supplier in the midstof the government's dirty deal for privatizing and deregulating our hydro,"
Hampton said. "It's a betrayal of the highest order to abandon them and sell their contracts out of province."
Hydro One announced Thursday it was selling its retail energy business for $48 million to a unit of Edmonton-based Epcor Utilities, effective April 30.
When Ontario Hydro was broken up, Hydro One retained the rights to the valued "Ontario Hydro" brand name and has sold fixed-price power contracts to 196,000 customers using the name "Ontario Hydro Energy" and flaunting its
roots as a successor company to Ontario Hydro.
Now, without even waiting for public hearings on the privatization of Hydro One, these customers are being bundled up and sold to an Alberta company
most will never have heard of.
"Premier Eves should halt this sale and call off the deregulation and privatization of Hydro until the people of Ontario have a chance to decide this issue in the next election," Hampton said.
Hampton said people should check the publicpower.ca website regularly for updates on the issue and to sign the NDP's online petition.
