You might find this performance chart from TIAA-CREF interesting. I look at it every day because all my wife's retirement money is in the inflation-protected bond fund:

Notice that the 5-year return of their "growth" fund is now down to 5.83% (others are better, of course). But their bond fund has already overtaken that and another stock fund for that period.

But most interesting is the year-to-date performance. After a few million contributors begin to take note of that kind of return, there may be second thoughts about sticking with equities.
