re: China Mobile Formal GPRS Launch on May 17th

>> Chinese GPRS To Start Operation On May

Asiaport Daily News
April 26, 2002

According to the relevant persons with China Mobile, its hotly-reported GPRS will formally put into use on May 17th.

Then more than 100 million China Mobile users in 200 cities in China will be able to apply to log on to the mobile internet to get information.

According to China Unicom's fee standard in Guangzhou and Shenzhen's trial commercial use, to surf the internet by mobile phone may be cheaper than by the fix line phone.

China started the establishment of GPRS test network on 1999.

July 2001, it conducted the trial commercial operation in Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

On March 15, 2002 it released the expanded trial commercial operation in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other places.

On April 8th, China Unicom opened its CDMA network, people thought that China Mobil must release its GPRS to compete with it. However, China Mobile took no action. It takes more than one year for it to prepare for it.

Analysts think that the reason for China Mobile's careful development has some relations with the failure of its WAP. Persons from China Mobile also say that putting a immature technology to the market is irresponsible.

Now they believe that after one year's trial, GPRS can definitely pass the test of market for China Mobile has more than 100 million users. They must need more digital communications. As for the contents, the providers develop very quickly, who lay a foundation for the start of GPRS.

In order to attract more users, China Mobile adopts flexible charging models. It is not like the CDMA which focuses on the middle and high end users.

China Mobile expresses that as the largest GSM operator, it will lead all users to 3G. But it is still waiting for the management department make up its mind to start 3G market. <<
