The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan could be a bidder for the $594-million (U.S.) fertilizer business of WMC Ltd., Australia's third-largest mining company. The Post's Garry Marr writes that officials at Potash did not deny they are interested. Betty-Ann Heggie, senior vice-president of corporate affairs, said: "You can pretty well assume almost anything that's out there, we will probably run some numbers on it. That doesn't mean we are necessarily doing anything on it." She did, however, say that the company made a profit last year and that its balance sheet was good. In addition, Ms. Heggie noted that the company has publicly said it would like to make acquisitions. Melbourne-based UBS Warburg analyst Peter Blight said Potash was a potential bidder for the WMC assets. WMC may be moving to sell its fertilizer business as it prepares to split its base metals mines from its alumina unit. The $594-million (U.S.) estimate came from John Watson, chairman of Australian fertilizer company Pivot Ltd.
