French government forgiveness of traffic tickets causes problems.
If you are ethical only
because you believe in God, you are buying your ticket to heaven or
trying to tear up your ticket to hell. In either case, you are just being a
shrewd profiteer, nothing else. The idea of being ethical is to be
ethical for no reason except that that is the way to be if you want the
world to run smoothly. I think that people who say virtue is its own
reward or honesty is the best policy have the right idea

I heard something interesting that reminded me of this part of the discussion. Apparently in France since DeGaulle in the '60s the incoming prime minister forgives all traffic tickets. The citizens quickly realized the opportunities this implies, and as a result ignore traffic laws at an increasing rate, in direct relation to the closeness of the election. They park in handicapped places, speed, drive reckless, etc. I don't know that the story is true, but if so it is an interesting response from the descendents of such a distinguished philosophical legacy. You'd think better of them, huh?
