In the early 80s there were more than 250 disk drive companies. Now there are only 5 desktop drive manufacturers left. There are only 3 enterprise drive manufacturers left. There are only 4 mobile drive manufacturers left. For some reason, it takes a while for disk drive companies to realize that a business plan that depends on losing money on every disk drive shipped in the expectation of making up for it in volume is just not a very good business plan.<g>

Desktop accounts for around 70%-75% of unit shipments. Enterprise accounts for around 10%-15% and Mobile accounts for around 10%-15%.

Valuations have remained depressed in this industry for so long that one who knows his way around the supply lines can establish some really good cost basis for whatever type of market now seems possible in the near term.
