<<Nothing much has changed in France, since the days of surrendering to Hitler after 12 hours of non-battle.>>

From May 10, 1940 until late June, the French army fought continuously against the Wehrmacht, losing thousands of killed and wounded and hundreds of thousands captured. The Wehrmacht overran Northern France and Belgium, then turned south and overran most of France. A peace was established because the French army was routed, but thousands fought on in parts of French Colonial Africa, as well as in underground units in occupied France. In 1944, a French division fought in Normandy, and the French Army re-established itself in the field after a large portion of the country was liberated. A significant French force assisted in the invasion of Germany in 1945.

France and its armed forces suffered from incompetence and bad luck in WWII. Fortunately they toughed it out and were finally victorious. But I'd hardly accuse them of "non-battle"...
