Eric - This is a great list of all the things that are present that may be responsible for rapid uptake in Korea.

-> 1xRTT data transmission speed
-> "Always On" 1xRTT packet-switched data connection
-> Experience with packet-switched data since 1999 (IS95B)
-> Well cultivated market (WAP based data services)
-> Unique metrics of Korean market (see SKT presentation)
-- * Market consolidated from 5 to 3 players: Limited competition
-- * 61% penetration as of December 2001 (Forecasted 79% penetration in 2005)
-- * ARPU steadily growing
-- * Prepaid almost non-existent: 0.5% of total subscribers
-- * Relatively low 3G license fees : 25% level of European telcos
-- * Customers extremely receptive to new technology
-- * Technology leadership & extreme dedication to task
-> Limited Vendors simplifyiong IOT
-> Unusually high acceptance rate of WAP early on (compared to US/Europe)
-> Early introduction of meaningful data services
-> Color handsets
-> Color microbrowser (based on WAP 2.0)
-> Color content
-> Other "data oriented" functions in handset OS (SKT's GVM) & UI
-> Steadily increasing content (including color content)
-> Strong development communitty
-> Downloadable Java (or BREW) content and apps
-> Refined market segmentation and new service offerings (SKT's TING & UTO)
-> Integrated multi-interface Internet Portal Offering (SKT's NATE)
-> Handset Subsidies (workarounds to bypass ban)

We know they are sufficient conditions, but we don't know which are the necessary ones. So while it might be possible to say that some of these aren't present in the US, such as "experience with packet switched data", and therefore rollout will be slower here. However, as you look at the list, many are the same or will be the same such as "1x" data transmission speed and "always on". One big difference though is one I don't see in your list. Less certain is whether there will be pricing on the $1 per meg level as is present at KDDI here in US.

Interestingly enough, we know that many of these are even less present for uptake of GPRS. Obviously many of the features, I don't know about color, but even more important is the low pricing issue. We know that is not present and we know the uptake is not there. I think the response of Nokia to KDDI might be that "we can do everything KDDI can do" i.e. color, data etc, but at what price? Content is important but content is written by providers that see a mass consumer market. Will there be one if GPRS is sold at a price per meg that only companies can bear?
