NDP slams Stockwell for zapping public Hydro debate

QUEEN'S PARK, ON, April 28 - NDP Leader Howard Hampton today
sharply criticized Energy Minister Chris Stockwell for barring the public from
last-minute hearings he's holding on the sale of Hydro One tomorrow.
"Chris Stockwell's private hydro show is an insult to the people of
Ontario," Hampton said. "Stockwell is banning the public from public hearings
and he's vowed to go ahead with the sale of Hydro One no matter what. What a
farce."
Late Friday evening, the Conservatives announced they would hold two
hours of public hearings on the Hydro One sale Monday in Toronto. The hearings
are closed to the general public. Ministry of Energy staff told Hampton's
staff the reason for the behind closed-door meetings is that the hearing room
is too small to accommodate a big crowd.
"Either there are no larger rooms in the whole province or Chris
Stockwell is afraid the seven in 10 Ontarians who oppose hydro privatization
will upstage him during his taxpayer-funded made-for-TV private hydro show,"
Hampton said.
The Conservatives have consistently tried to keep the public in the dark
about their hydro sell-off plan. They tried to sneak through Hydro One
privatization without the legal right to do so, announced the privatization as
the legislature was rising for Christmas and released the prospectus at
midnight just before the Easter weekend.
Hampton said the Conservatives should put their hydro sell-off plan to a
vote.
"It's time the Conservatives called an election to give the people the
power to determine the future of their most valuable public assets," Hampton
said. Hampton said people should check the www.publicpower.ca Web Site
regularly for updates on the issue and to sign the NDP's online petition.
