Analysts expect 2002 to be a year of mild recovery for the $140 billion microchip industry, with sales inching up six percent this year after plunging more than 30 percent in 2001, the sector's worst year on record.
Hsuan said UMC expected orders for UMC's most advanced and high-margin manufacturing processes, using circuits 0.18 microns wide or thinner, would show the greatest growth thanks to demand from the wireless telecom and PC graphics chip sectors.
