Now here's a better theory: <And what is self interest??? Happiness.... and how is happiness achieved? By aligning your own self interests with those of others. Trying to achieve true happiness at the expense of others never works... you bury your negative feelings and self loathing through various compensating mechanisms and they fester and make you sick. >

That's my theory too [which is of course why it's a good theory].

The word which covers it is greed. Greed is the root of all evil, not money [contrary to popular ideas - money is no more evil than metres or kilograms being just a unit of measure].

Lawyers spend their days fighting over assets with there being winners and losers. It's easy to get a distorted view of self-interest from the world of disputatious legal conflict. Of course there are many lawyers doing happier things such as arranging agreements in a clear form so the parties are happy, with aligned self-interests.
