I have both, cable at home and DSL at my studio. The cable used to blow away the DSL line for speed, but when Comcast took it over from @Home they put a speed limit on it. So now its only a bit faster (25-50%) when before it was 3x to 4x faster (it blew away a T1 line for download).

The DSL tends to go down more frequently, if I could switch to cable at the second location I would in a second. The cost is the same. The BS about one being shared and one being dedicated is just that, BS. The DSL is only dedicated until you get to the DSLAM then you are on the same route with everyone else and because the DSL providers are suffering, you are going to see some pretty serious oversubscribing. Its nice and fast when you first get it and then it gets worse and worse as they add more users to the DSLAM. This is true to a certain degree with cable as well. The trick is to live somewhere like I do where the node is less traveled.

BTW to make either work optimally you have to tweak the operating system since as shipped no OS is optimized for broadband speeds. Its amazing the speed diff once you do this. I've seen people who had cable who were getting speeds around ISDN speed, after I employed tweaks they were immediately 3 to 4 times faster. That and turning off the stupid proxy servers.
