c2:

Could it be that the Chinese are buying IS 95 A/B chips in substantial quantity and getting discounts?

I don't think so. I thought that R-UIM support (required for China handsets) was first provided in the MSM5100/5105, and not in any of the MSM3xxx's, but I may be wrong on this. I'm sure Ben or Eric will set me straight if I am. <g>

Plus, Unicom is upgrading the network to 1x, so why would they want any non-1x chips in their handsets? OTOH, it could be that Qualcomm had to agree to give the Chinese a break on 1x chipset prices, same as for the overall handset royalties, in which case my concern about declining 1x ASP's is well founded, since as handset sales into China ramp up, ASP's will be negatively affected.

I think I'll do a little more work to see what volume of 1x chipset sales into handsets for domestic Chinese sale (and at what discount) would account for the Q2 02 QCT revenues being less than I figured based on a stable $35 1x chipset price. Hard to imagine this would be the case, and I'd expect the Koreans to raise a major stink if they are paying more for 1x chipsets for Korean domestic handset sales than the Chinese are for their domestic handset sales, since they've already made a lot of noise over the lower Chinese domestic royalty rate for handsets.

As for the MSM3xxx's chipsets, I'm not sure where the volume markets are now.
