Yes, I agree, the SUF ripoff in SA was disgraceful. Happens
in a lot of places. However, years ago when I was travelling in the Soviet Union around the time of Glasnot
and then some years later, I got a look at power and
corruption on a scale no one was prepared for. Needing
hard dollars will not stop powerful interests in Russia
from taking over anything. Or, at least, it hasn't so
far. Even Putin agrees that the rule of law is not all
that advanced. At one time I kept a file of business deals
that went awry--losing 20k does that to me--but I finally
threw it out. My warning is simply this--don't expect
the Russians to play by any of the rules we've come to
expect. The Chinese restaurant in St. Petersberg is the
real centre of power. Until it no longer is, keep a close
watch on your money.
