Australian Special Forces troops shot two al-Qaeda fighters in a gunfight in Afghanistan, the Australian Defence Force claimed on Tuesday.

Australian Defence Force spokesman Brigadier Mike Hannan said a small patrol of Special Air Services (SAS) troops returned fire when four al-Qaeda fighters opened up on them with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

Hannan said none of the Australians were wounded, but two of the al-Qaeda fighters were either killed or wounded in the engagement which happened on Monday morning.

The Australian troops were on a surveillance mission of a suspected terrorist site in a mountainous area south-east of the capital Kabul, when they were fired on.
