I have the same thoughts about the email, but it cost him a good job. If he has just said the same stuff or wrote a letter, most likely no one else would have found out, especially his employers.
Anything on the web can go around the world in short order and can stay there forever. Lots of pictures showing up that I suspect were not meant for public view.
In 1991, I was setting up an oracle database on a unix box. Plans were to have a small network with just the server and two clients. I had to keep moving out of the way where I was working on the equipment to let a crew install wiring for "email". When they were done, I noticed that they had used the same cable and wire we were using. Out system used tcp/ip and either net. `I asked their expert if we could use their network for our system. I was told it would not work but I could try. It worked fine in the same building and when reporting this fact, I was told it would not go outside that building. I tried from a different building, no problem. In fact, soon the group developing the application was logging onto our server from 3000 miles away. I was one of the first to install the cards and software needed to make tcp/ip work on PCs. I installed many for other employees and it was not long before some were abusing the system, lots of porn hunters plus non work use. Some of us even were trading stock and checking the market from our work computers;-).
As you probably know, ever packet has both the sender's and receiver's ip address in it, else how would all the routers know where to forward the packets.
This means it is very easy to track anyone's usage of the internet. However, it is treated like wire tapping and is illegal for anyone to do it unless you have the blessing of who ever is in charge of such things on the net that is being tapped.
There was one employee that was spending about 7 hours a day almost every day gathering porn off the net while at work. Easy to track his activities for some time and then he was in big trouble. Some contractors were fired for using government computers for cruising the net. Civil servants got chewed and a letter put in their file. Black listed for some time. This is the email a person would get when caught.
