2001 & Prior Mobile Handset Shipments & Market Share Abstract

Unless otherwise noted all reported numbers in this abstract are from Gartner Dataquest.

1). Strategy Analytics, Micrologic Research, and Gartner Dataqust have all checked in with there reports of handset shipments for 2001. As always there are some discrepancies.

* Gartner:            399.6 million units
* Strategy Analytics: 393.4 million units
* Micrologic: 387.0 million units

2). Gartner Dataquest noted that mobile-phone sales fell 3 percent in 2001 from 412.7 to 399.6 million in 2001, their first decline ever, as phone companies cut subsidies on handsets and consumers snubbed new models.

3). A year earlier Gartner reported that worldwide mobile phone sales exceeded 412.7 million units in 2000, representing a 45.5 percent increase over the 283.6 million mobile phones sold in 1999. It should be noted that considerable inventory was left in channels at the end of 2000.

4). Despite the fact that unit sales were down in 2001, Nokia Oyj, the world's No. 1 cellular-phone maker increased unit shipments from 126.4 million units to 139.7 million units (+10.5%) and increased its market share from 30.6 percent in 2000 to 35 (+14.4%) percent in 2001.

5). In 4 years, after overtaking Motorola for the leading cellular-phone maker Nokia has increased its market share from 21% to 35% (+66%), and further distanced itself not only from # 2 Motorola, but also the #3 contender -historically Ericsson - but now Siemens, who in turn is being challenged by Samsung.

6). Nokia now has 2.36X unit shipments as its next nearest competitor, 4.8X the 3rd ranked manufacturer and its 2001 shipments equaled those of its next 4 competitors combined.
