Nanya, Infineon in $10 Bln Chip Project, Paper Says (Update1)

Taipei, May 1 (Bloomberg) -- Nanya Technology Corp. signed an agreement with Infineon Technologies AG of Germany to build two chip plants in Taiwan for $10 billion, the Economic Daily News said, citing people it did not identify.
Nanya, Taiwan's biggest memory-chip maker by market value, and Infineon, the world's fourth-largest memory-chip maker, plan to start construction of the first plant next year, the report said. Infineon's market share will almost double to 20 percent after the plants are completed, the paper said.
Infineon earlier said it expects to sign a preliminary agreement this month to cooperate with Nanya. The two companies will make a joint announcement tomorrow, Nanya said earlier.
Infineon needs alliances with companies such as Nanya to share the costs of expanding production and research and compete with larger rivals Samsung Electronics Co. and Micron Technology Inc., analysts said.
Nanya, which specializes in manufacturing, is also seeking partners for technology development. The Taiwan company currently uses chipmaking technology from International Business Machines Corp. |
