Fred,
A couple of other positives:
1. US/GB role accepted by both sides in ramalla dispute. This is acceptable to israel because Europe not involved. This could be the beginning of the future international presence.
2. Israel will take a press hit for not allowing Kofi to come to jenin but that is necessary to prevent future bogus prosecutions in Switzerland. Israelis claim only 7 civilians killed in Jenin. Palestinians are now backing off earlier massacre statements. Independent observers while commenting on the physical destruction are also talking to casualties under 100 combined Israeli/Palestinian fighters/civilians.
3. The war with egypt in 1973 led to peace. Egyptian army fought bravely and effectively. Palestinians have done the same in battle with israeli soldiers. Peace sometimes comes from this as both sides realize that war is futile.
4. Your saudi points + perhaps saudi recognition that arabs must move to a more modern western economic system. Oil is not enought anymore.
