BUGS Subsidiary Awarded Site Cleanup for Dry Cleaning Franchisee
Independent Validation of Project Results Could Save Dry Cleaning Industry Millions
CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2002--Sub-Surface Waste Management Inc. (SSWM), a subsidiary of U.S. Microbics Inc. (OTCBB:BUGS - news), said today that it has been awarded a remediation contract from American BioSystems (ABS) for a confidential national dry cleaning franchise owner seeking definitive cleanup results and validated third party data on a better, faster, cheaper and safer solution for source remediation of dry cleaning fluids accidentally released at a commercial shopping center site in Michigan.

The project cleanup results will be used by the franchisee's environmental counsel to establish an effective alternative solution to conventional treatment of dry cleaning solvent contamination plaguing many dry cleaning establishments.

Dan Badia of American BioSystems Inc. (ABS) stated, "ABS has arranged this remediation project under direct supervision with the client's environmental counsel who will be in charge of all regulatory aspects of the project including public dissemination of the cleanup results to other dry cleaning establishments facing contamination problems. American BioSystems of Clinton Twp., Mich. is the SSWM exclusive agent in USEPA Region 5, the upper Midwest states."

Bruce Beattie, president of SSWM, stated, "SSWM biotechnology solutions have the potential to save the industry up to 50 percent the cost of conventional solutions and significantly shorten the cleanup time for on-site treatment. We believe this cleanup contract will establish our technology's effectiveness, may also create a new cleanup methodology standard for this key industry, and provide a significant market opportunity for SSWM. With 17,000 active drycleaner facilities in the nation, containing some level of contamination and estimated conventional cleanup technology costs range from $100,000 to $2,000,000 per site, the SSWM technology has the potential of saving the dry cleaning industry millions of dollars in cleanup costs."

SSWM provides comprehensive civil and environmental engineering project management services including specialists to design, permit, build and operate environmental waste cleanup treatment systems using conventional, biological and filtration technologies.
