I am afraid you are drawing the wrong conclusion, then. The point is that, however sagacious, the Founders and their successors were limited by the state scholarship and science in their day, and therefore are not authorities on everything. Economists have pretty well established, both by deduction and by empirical study, that free- trade is preferable for all parties. It favors the consumer, helps to open new avenues of trade abroad, and frees the national economy to develop along more specialized lines appropriate to its level of development......
