Here's the last two sentences of the article:

Sanders also had a shot at the conference sponsors. "Merrill Lynch said AMD was a dying company in 1980, but if you had bought the stock then you could be as rich as I am," he said.

I checked this out, and the average price of AMD in 1980 was around $4.80 - that comes out to about a 4% compounded return. If you can't beat Treasury bonds over a 22-year period, you are a dying company.

Intel averaged around $.41 in 1980, for a compounded return of approximately 21.5%. Sounds good to me.
