>> I do support free trade, but only with those who will trade freely with us. For the rest I'm not opposed to tariffs. <<

that is a reasonable stance. unfortunately politicians, bought and paid for by the powerful multinational corporations, sign free trade agreements that aren't fair to the american blue-collar worker, whether a steel worker, a textile worker, or a farmer our politicians don't even bat an eye when they are doling out tens of billions in economic aid to countries who dump their exports into our markets and force our industries into economic straits.

but God forbid, a working american asks the government to protect their interests from subsidized foreign competition, and all the free traders cry foul. it is economic treason of the highest order. theodore roosevelt understood this.

"There must always be as a minimum a tariff which will not only allow for the collection of an ample revenue but which will at least make good the difference in the cost of production here and abroad; that is, the difference in the labor cost here and abroad, for the well-being of the wage-worker must ever be a cardinal point of American policy"
