I would pick Sun, IBM, SGI, & DEC (CPQ) as the tops.

Cheryl, I have two observations on this:

1) I'm sure it's of immense solace to SGI and DEC (CPQ) shareholders that their Unix implementations made the top 4.

2) This ranking and your previous post about there being only 2 players left in the game after HWPQ melts down seems to indicate that you're placing a lot of emphasis on high-end servers; there have been and will continue to be more than two players in other games in which Sun is involved. This impression is reinforced by your low opinion of Linux, which is actually quite a good Unix implementation IMHO, just not for high-end servers.

twister's remark that "the high end is a side show" is extreme, but it's not entirely without merit when we look at Sun's future and potential competitive developments in both hardware and software.

I'm not a basher and don't want to be called one, but does anyone seriously believe that this management shakeup is happening for no reason at all? Has Sun's outgoing top management put together such a solid strategy and plan for the future that it can be implemented by less-senior underlings, and so now that there's no more heavy lifting to be done, they're putting themselves out to pasture?

Or is it more reasonable to conclude that Sun's situation is like that of other companies that have had major management shakeups: the CEO and board realize that a radical course change is necessary or the boat goes down?

Cheryl, I always respect your thoughts on any subject. In this case, I think you are under-reacting.
