SAN FRANCISCO -- During a technology conference here on Tuesday, National Semiconductor Corp. here said it is no longer interested in selling its wafer fab in Maine, announcing plans to manufacturer some of its key analog chip lines in that plant.

Back in 1999, National announced plans to sell off a majority interest in the 8-inch, sub-micron fab in South Portland, Maine, as part of a major restructuring. The fab was geared for the production of x86-based microprocessors for mainstream PCs, but National exited that business in the late 1990s (see May 5, 1999 story ).
