SINGAPORE -- IC-packaging and test provider ST Assembly Test Services Ltd. (STATS) reported sales of $39.4 million for the first quarter of 2002, a 19% decrease over the first quarter of 2001 but a 16.2% increase over the prior quarter.

Net loss in first quarter narrowed to $26.6 million, compared to a deficit of $47.0 million in the prior quarter and a loss of $23 million in the like period a year ago.

Diluted loss per ADS and diluted loss per ordinary share for the first quarter was $0.27 and $0.03, respectively, compared to diluted loss of $0.23 per ADS and $0.02 per ordinary share a year ago. Diluted loss per ADS and diluted loss per ordinary share were $0.48 and $0.05, respectively, in fourth quarter 2001.
