Energy for the Environment
Interview by Donna Guzik

Canadian Hydro Developers is a leader in the green power market and even though projects are small by utility standards, profits and a clean environment go hand in hand for this small Alberta based company says Canadian Hydro Developers Chief Executive Officer John Keating

Summary

Canadian Hydro Developers (KHD-TSE) is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta.

They own and operate hydroelectric, wind and gas fuelled plants in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.

Their mandate is to use environmentally friendly technology to generate emissions-free and low-impact energy.

They are in the green power market and currently have 230 mega watts of projects under development.

The green power market is relatively unknown but it is a huge market, competing with other fossil fuel energy companies.

It's an area that requires people to change their old habits and receive energy in untraditional ways.

The deregulation of the power market in Ontario will affect Canadian Hydro Developers. They have four hydro plants in Ontario all of which are on a long term contract with the Ontario Electricity Finance Corp, (formerly Ontario Hydro).

Canadian Hydro Developers are experts in the waterpower and wind energy field, not only in Canada but worldwide as well.

Their plants have been built since 1990 and they continue to develop their own long lasting projects.

Net earnings in 2001 increased 34% to $3.7 million from $2.7 million in 2000.

Canadian Hydro Developers are wholesalers and do not have retail operations which keeps their infrastructure costs to a minimum.

84% of their production last year was long term contracts which guaranteed a solid hedged price, but spot market prices fluctuate on an hourly basis, depending on how much the wind is blowing and water is flowing.

Keating sees his company growing up to 25% for this year and next.
