Tom, No. Backing with a PM is 19th Century and we'll never see that again. That is not a comment on whether its a good idea or not. But a PM backed dollar has as much chance as the teenage move toward virginity before marriage.

In fact, many influential American firms are seeing their cos. flounder due to the strong dollar and want it to weaken. Since the major holders are Japan and China, I can't see where Republicans would shed any tears if they got stuck holding the bag for the buck. Also, many, many firms are stuck with debt they'll never be able to repay. A weaker dollar will help some of them survive a bit longer.
