BBC Launches New Internet Search Engine
Thu May 2,10:41 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - The British Broadcasting Corporation launched a new Internet search engine Thursday, saying that 80 percent of UK Web users believed the current search options are not good enough.

BBCi Search, available from the homepage bbc.co.uk, had the advantage of providing relevant results free of advertising and commercial constraints, whilst giving preference to UK Web sites, the BBC said.

It pointed to a recent poll by NOP commissioned on its behalf, which found that 80 percent of British Web surfers felt current search engines could be improved, and 64 percent were frustrated by the amount of U.S. sites and advertisers they came across.

"It is quite clear that the current search marketplace doesn't have the needs of Internet users at its heart," said Ashley Highfield, director of BBC New Media.

NOP interviewed around 500 people on April 12-14 for its poll.
