10000, lirix,
OS of the borg win 3.51, win 95, win 98, win nt 3.51, win nt 4.0, win 2000, win xp. how are they different, how are they all the same.
Linux Redhat, Suse, Caldera, Mandrake, ...... how are they different, how are they all the same.
Unix Irix, SunOS, solaris, hp-ux, ibm.... how are they different, how are they all the same.
The value of Linux to Irix is that it make Unix knowledgable folks as opposed to borgheads.
All unixes and linuxes from a users perspective for many of the admin and general tasks have much much in common.
The way to use linux to amplify the value of irix is lirix. Attempt to migrate the look and feel of administration tools, commands etc so a linux admin dude is an irix admin dude.
Thus in new markets or arena of competition you don't have to overcome the complete fud of a different OS.
For IBM porting linux to their commodity hardware make sense. OK I'm being nasty. For Sun adopting gnome makes some sense. But your still stuck with slowlaris For SGI, doing Itanium in linux. ??? Low power tight pack mips boxes that screem but have a lirix look.
