Bad move at this age. He did the conversion in 1999 at the very top of the market. Plus he paid tax on gains when he coverted that went away in 2000-2001. He will never recover that move in tax savings. He calls it a tax dodge when really he is paying the tax in advance and unless one is very young the coversions generally do not work out mathematically.

There was an opportunity given to reverse that decision by congress but sounds as if he did not take advantage of that. The ability to reverse was made available because everyone screamed about what I said above. He is a pure dumba for doing what he did and a double dumba for not reversing the conversion.
