it has nothing to do with being inauthentic, it simply has to do with being authentically liberal on trade issues. it is not traditional conservatism, plain and simple. it is a liberal, rockefeller republican type of conservatism which is best described as neo-conservatism.

neo-conservatives hate to have their liberal defections made plain for all to see, so they resort to the oft-liberal tactic of demagoguery which says trade protectionists like pat buchanan are the socialists and they are the true beacons of conservatism. well i'm exposing that feeble argument for what it is. pure hogwash. free trade has been a liberal tendency for more than two centuries and it has burrowed its way into the republican party and neo-conservatism.

you want the most blatant example of republican and neo-conservatism hypocrisy? many republicans claim to don the mantle of lincoln, "we are the party of lincoln", etc. well lincoln was clearly a protectionist and the party has totally abandoned that stance.
