JF - Medarex and Genmab.

I belive one should look at Genmab as the establishment of an European bridgehead. To get the thing started and motivate others to provide the funding, as well as motivate their own ownership of a third of the company, Medarex had to provide the newly-born with some products to work with. One of which turned out to be quite promising. (Or perhaps it was just a smart ploy to get Lisa out of the way).

It seems to me that the bridgehead strategy has succeeded quite well. The name of the MAB-game at present seems to be to get "control" over as many potential targets as possible. It is the targets not the MABbing technology per se that is the critical factor these days. From that viewpoint, I feel that Medarex is doing better than Abgenix. And Genmab seems to be quite helpful in extending Medarex's sphere of influence into Europe.

I can see a distinct difference between the tactics employed by the two companies. Abgenix works with a few companies like Curagen, who are supposed to harvest as many potential drug targets as possible. The spoils are then divided between Abgenix and their partner each developing their MABs of choice.

Medarex is more into an ELAN-type of set-up, robbing smaller poorly capitalized companies of 50 % of their IP through the establishment of joint-ventures.

That they managed to recruit Tularik and Incyte into their camp impressed me. I am sure Abgenix wouldn't have said no to having those names on their list of trophies.
