I'm interested, Liz, in you sharing one single defining insight you've gained during your lifetime.
An amusung game, perhaps. Let's hear one of your defining insights.
Here is one of mine:
The differences between science/engineering and religion/philosophy may be summed up in a single word: results. You affirm this difference every time you turn on the hot water tap, start the engine of your car, turn on an electrical appliance, fly in an airplane, cross a bridge, undergo surgery, use the Internet, etc, etc, etc. None of these actions would be possible without scientific inquiry.
It is true that at the edge of scientific inquiry lies a realm of uncertainty. It is totally misleading to conclude from this that significant uncertainty - meaning uncertainty with a tangible effect on practical use - is a defining characteristic of science. If it were, flying in airplanes and crossing bridges would be a good deal more challenging than they are. |
