No, Del, I am not a nurse. I guess you are really asking me how I could be so stupid!!!! I'm just not very chemically inclined, and got through high school and college taking a lot of biology classes to meet the science requirements, because chemistry made my head swim.
While not understanding the specifics of the chemical reactions which are causing the holes in the ozone layer, I did understand that most of the damage is being done by refrigerants (and don't forget the bovine flatulence factor). I do understand what some of the results are, i.e., increased skin cancer, glaciers melting, rising sea levels.
Isn't there a stock around SI someplace that is a bet on less damaging refrigerants? I used to follow it, and seem to have forgotten its symbol. Does anyone know??
What I do for work is handle state and private disability claims, and Workers' Compensation claims, for a large orthopaedic practice in San Francisco. It involves no science knowledge, no writing skills, but a good understanding of disability law, and some patience and empathy because I'm around patients who have sometimes just gotten the bad news that they have to have their hip joint replaced or something. If I don't do everything correctly, though, they don't have any income to pay their bills, so it does require attention and accuracy. It's a relatively unimportant part of my life, though--just a way to make money to invest in the market. |
