but the founding fathers never claimed it was good. it was the reality of the times, but they never said it was good. in fact, thomas jefferson regularly tried to pass laws abolishing slavery. he made references to the evils of slavery in his first draft of the declaration of independence, but his peers squelched him and forced him to take it out.

at any rate, there have been plenty of conservatives who were not slave owners who were against free trade. lincoln didn't own slaves, he did more than anyone in his time to end slavery. yet he was a protectionist. teddy roosevelt didn't own slaves. how about all the republicans after the civil war up through world war two who didn't own slaves but were protectionist? how about barry goldwater, an old-fashioned conservative who voted against kennedy's trade exapnsion act of 1962?

at any rate, my point is not that we should be against free trade just because our founding fathers believed that way. my point is, we had a century and a half of experience with a tariff system that proved quite successful in this country. we've had half a century of free trade in this country and we are beginning to see what a disaster it has become.
