H-P/Compaq get the nod from Merrill By Julie Rannazzisi Hewlett-Packard (HWP: news, chart, profile) and Compaq Computer (CPQ: news, chart, profile) bucked the dire trend in the tech sector Friday, trading up 2 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively. The merged companies will begin trading under the new ticker symbol "HPQ" on Monday. Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich said in a research note that he favors the merger and expects to see negative investor sentiment lift as the company posts decent numbers. He also views the stock as attractive, adding that he likes "a story that is cost savings-driven in this environment."
