we have been more prosperous than at any time in our history in every period since our founding. that is mostly due to advances in technology, not free trade. let me explore your claim a little further. the top 1% holds 40% of the wealth today, double the 21% in 1949. so free trade has made america quite wealthy indeed. it just hasn't made all of america wealthy, it has made a precious few wealthy. i could go even further, by pointing out that in 1960 18% of women with children under six were in the workforce. now it stands at 2/3 of women with children under six in the workforce. if you have both parents working and a collectivist government that doles out an increasing amount of social services, i'm sure you may believe we are more prosperous. but at what cost to our society?

marx warned us this would happen:

"The protective system...is conservative...the Free Trade system works destructively. It breaks up old nationalities and carries antagonism of proletariat and bourgeoisie to the uttermost point. In a word, the Free Trade system hastens the Social Revolution. In this revolutionary sense alone gentlemen, I am in favor of Free Trade." --Karl Marx
