You bring to mind a remark Thomas Sowell made recently: "opinions are everywhere, but knowledge is scarce".

Also relevant to your case, by Israel Kirzner (paraphrased): The conclusions of economics are largly counterintuitive. Without guidance, the intelligent layman is likely to make prescriptions inimical to the interests he purports to serve.
