fraud: A deliberate deception for unfair or unlawful gain.

To issue a "Strong Buy" while calling said stocks "a piece of crap", saying "this stock has no floor", etc. in my opinion meets the above definition. They were consciously (and IMO deliberately) issuing recommendations that they knew were bogus. And we all know that the firms in question (MLCO etc.) can, and do, benefit financially in such cases. As in, we get to underwrite more IPO's or secondary offerings if we continue the charade. On the other hand, speak the truth (as in Prudential I think it was who initiated some "Sell" recommendations about a year ago) and you'll be cut off from the CFO and the company.
