Decision Point reports that the GAAP P/E for the S&P as of May 3 was 42.1. The normal range is between 10 (oversold) and 20 (overbought). They calculate the pro forma P/E at 27.7.

For the GAAP P/E, they divide the total dollar value of the shares by operating earnings(www.spglobal.com/earnings.html).
