Expense Stock options? Shocking!

If all companies had to expense stock options, then how many tech companies since 1996 have been operating at a loss. How about ALL?

If you take a fine tooth comb and look at all the edgar filings for the 'success' stories, 10%-20% of float in employee stock options is not rare.

Here's a typical story in two of the good guys:

In Dec 2001, this company registered 23.9M shares for stock options.

That's a good 22% of the float.

In 1991, this company registered a total of 2.08B stock options out of a float of 4.52B today. ?40%? of float? In 2000, only 680M were unused, which means 1.4B stock options were already granted.

These are just two of what is generally considered as the best of the techs today. If you dig superficially in edgar with all your favourite stocks, don't be surprised if all of these incredible numbers pop up.

It's hard to imagine a world without stock options for tech workers.
