Yes, it does take a lot of water for them to take off. Their feet are set so far back on their bodies that walking is extremely awkward. However, there aren't many birds or mammals that are as fast and graceful in the water. They remind me very much of the Penguins that I've seen swimming. Just like little torpedoes. Up here, they sometimes race by, underwater, to get past the canoe when I'm in a small river. The will duck down a hundred feet behind me and resurface a couple of hundred feet ahead in just a few seconds. I suppose the trade-off for not being able to walk on land is probably worth it.
