My own hunch is that they're still playing this one by ear, and still hoping that somehow it will just go away without forcing them to piss off somebody important (which actually doing something would inevitably require).

That fits with what I read as well. And it's by far the most depressing part of what's going on.

If I read what's written about the Jordanians and the Saudis correctly, the lack of a direction, whether finally workable or not, is the largest problems their regimes face right now. And if one is worried about the degree to which or the speed at which Al Qaida like groups gain legitimacy in these countries, it's much to be worried about.
