I wouldn't go that far as to say that we should all shorten our horizons to the short term. Really, it's about sector rotation and having a balanced portfolio. When part of your portfolio is down, like my large caps, then the other part is up, like my real estate and small caps. It's too much like gambling to think you're always going to be able to time the market and know exactly when to hop from one sector to another or when to get in and out in particular stocks. That is not a way to secure your future, but rather a way to gamble it away. The most sure way of securing your future hasn't changed since before the bubble. Stay diversified across categories and sectors and continue to save and invest as much as you can.
